Believe it or not, in India, Valentine Day has explicitly been discouraged by some of the Hindu fundamentalists(Shiv Shena). Violence usually occur between shopkeepers selling Valentine's related merchandise and these group of people. They would even 'camp' in parks to chase away couples holding hands or suspected to be lovers. Interesting right? Imagine people scaring couples with flares in East Coast Park, Lavender Park, West Coast park or Bukit Timah hill. Come to think of it, I don't see how this can be the case. Bollywood movies are so romantic, with men chasing women and performers shedding buckets of tears.
Back to our homeland... In Wikipedia, they mentioned that thanks to marketing efforts, Valentine Day is celebrated in some Asian countries by spending most money on Valentine's gifts and Singapore is mentioned in the ranks of South Korea and China. This must be something we got to be proud of. We are actually ROMANTIC bunch of people. Unspoken rule known to many, but mentioned by none is that the man got to plan the Valentine Day. This means reservation of dinner location, present, flowers etc etc( Once done with planning, DO NOT get approval from her. She loves surprises). Some people use this date to get attached or get engaged to their lover *gulp*. In military term, it is a mission that cannot go wrong!
One gift that amuses me most is the flower. They die within a couple of days, if lucky, weeks, yet ladies ADORES them. Could it be the pleasant image to see a well dressed lady holding a good looking bouquet of flowers? I do not know, but Valentine Day without the sight of flowers is like Chicken Rice without Chicken and Manchester United without Ronaldo(no pun). I did some research and hopefully this will help you plan a good Valentine Day flower gift! :)
Meaning of Flowers:
We men try not to spend too much money, and when it comes to valentine gifts, we are pretty good with our shopping hunts, discounts, sales etc. Guys, no matter how expensive the flowers are, never try to go for something cheaper but unfamiliar! It may lead to undesirable consequence. For example:
Bachelor button Flower: A beautiful big blue flower and it is the national flower of Poland, it symbolizes celibacy, singlehood, delicacy and hope for love. So unless you want to continue to be out of love, you should never use this flower!
Chrysanthemum Flower: A flower in Singapore more associated with tea. HAHA. Well, it symbolizes long life and prosperity, at times royalty. In Japan, the emperors sat on Chrysanthemum thrones, but before you go gaga over it, it is associated with death in Italy. Bad idea for Valentine's.
Cyclamen Flower: It is native in Africa and Mediterranean and it symbolizes resignation and goodbye. If you plan to see her ever again, this is one of the cheap grabs you can consider.Jokes aside, I personally only bought these 3 type of flowers and I haven't been proven wrong by any girl who doesn't like them!
Roses: It represents love, passion and unconscious beauty. It is also an universal flower for love, so you could seldom go wrong with this.
Sunflowers: It is very bright and symbolizes adoration, livelihood and radiant. Although they do not exactly spell L-O-V-E, their bright colors and charm will swoon any normal lady out there.
Tulips: This is rather classic. Among all of them, it seems to be the cheapest of them all. It symbolizes fame and perfect love. What's good for the pocket is always good for Valentine's Day!Now the type of flower is done, you need to know your quantity. I walked into a florist last weekend and realized different numbering has different meaning! There may be many different versions, but this is what I find interesting. My new found discovery that I shall share with you.
1. YOU ARE MY ONE AND ONLY! Yup, cheesy, extremely. The thing is girls know when we say this, she is my one and only-at this point of time-. If they count your whole teenage years, hmm, you may need more than one flower. But thank goodness girls don't exactly reveal this to keep the occasion wholesome pure and fun. :S
3.I LOVE YOU. The only thing I can think of to make this make sense is one word= one flower. WOW, so if you plan to read a poem to her, please please count the number of words, for the sake of your wallet.
9. LONG LASTING LOVE.
10. PERFECT LOVER. I am not too sure who is the perfect one. The giver or the receiver? If it is the giver, then if you buy this quantity, be prepared to keep the high expectation of a perfect lover.
11. I'M YOUR ADMIRER. If your date is not yet your girlfriend or just a crush, then this quantity might do just fine. If you're a football fan, it might even means complete love. 11 players on the fields make a complete team.
24. LOVING YOU EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY. Way to cheesy... No way man seriously.
99. YOU COMPLETE ME. This is used for engagement proposals. Look at what one flower means. This means a continuation to it. No matter how many other lovers I may had, you are the ONE that completes me (to be a 100). cheessssyyyy...
101. WILL YOU MARRY ME? This is a funny number to begin with. Let's do maths. I think why this number means the question is because 99 is the number of girls you may have dated, but she completes you. That makes it 100. The extra one represents your baby/child, which can only be made upon marriage. So there you go, 101!
365. LOVING YOU EVERYDAY. One flower for every every day. Such a big bouquet, i have yet to see one, pretty impressive and expensive I reckon. Please don't try this with the idea of deducting off the weekends and public holidays. Catastrophic!
All said and done, I am not selling flowers okay? The plants I grew never bear flowers, so no business this Valentine. I'm not having a date this Valentine because it falls on Chinese New Year and I will be off to Australia and yes I don't have anyone I admire. I wish you all the best with your master plan, and whether the date is a success or a failure, from the mouth of a lady, what matters is the thought, the heart and YOU! awwwww.

With much Love this valentines,
Raymond

I totally love the texture the filters give the flower petals. Thank you so much for the tutorial. I am going to be playing with that big stack of filters that have been sitting in the closet for the past five years!
